Only a handful of people touch our lives so dramatically. Some provide a constant glow over many years, while others are but a flash of lightning, leaving us all too soon.

There were many sides to Daniel - the  boyish charm, the confident swagger, the irrepressible smile. But also the gentle soul who thought deeply, loved passionately and cared deeply.

He could talk to anyone about almost anything. He was as much admired and respected by his peers and elders as he was loved by children - always ready with a listening ear or word of encouragement.

An accomplished sportsman, he played regular football and cricket, represented Northamptonshire at cross-country at the age of 12 and at 14 he became the county's youngest qualified referee.

In his last season he stepped up to captain the village cricket team and was responsible for nurturing the club's younger players. The team, which included 6 players under the age of 15, finished third in a highly competitive league.

His self-belief was legendary. He would never tire of talking you through a straight six, a spectacular catch or an incredible match-winning volley. It got better every time he told you.

Daniel also showed great promise away from the sports field. About to complete his studies and apprenticeship to be an electrical engineer, he had plans to emigrate and make a life in Australia.

Always ready with a cheeky grin and a quip, during his short life Daniel made us laugh, he made us cry and occasionally, like most lads of his age, he made us hold our head in our hands.

Most of all, he taught us that life was there to be enjoyed.
